Even if he were trying. Look at how small Ray's frame is at the time the movie was shot. Denzel could have bodied him up in the post easily. Plus, Ray's strength has never been in a one-on-one game; he's best at moving off of screens and being a spot-up shooter.

Last season (I think it was last season?) the NBA had a nick-names night, where players wore jerseys with nick-names instead of last names on the back; Allen's jersey said "Shuttlesworth"

The list of actors whom Lee reportedly considered for the role is pretty interesting: it includes T-Mac, Iverson, Garnett, Kobe, and Steph Marbury. It's fun to imagine different versions of the movie with each player, though T-Mac's would probably be, by far, the worst
