@avclub-740bc18f68a7140f7e82b025080d8c28:disqus Was? Jumping into the shower uninvited of a sex slave might not be literally rapey in and of itself, but it definitely puts Bond in line with dudes who say there are situations where they are owed sex on OKCupid.
You articulated that better than I think I have, and illuminated a lot of the problems inherent in prizes for fiction in particular.
Yeah, it was pretty patronizing at times. I think his other book Incendiary was better, and I haven't read his latest.
@avclub-3e9e0f1010418374c3dd9ccf3b0ed27c:disqus I have a hard time believing that a white writer will understand my Asian identity better than another Asian person, but you know, maybe I should be less demanding of well-meaning white folks. And there are plenty of talented writers of color who don't get the marketing…
It's still my favorite Tyler novel, but I really like just about everything she's written.
I know it's crazy, but I would rather read fiction about MY culture from someone who's a part of it. And honestly, I probably read more white authors than I do minority authors. I think you're projecting other opinions on my comment, considering I just cited two white writers I really enjoy.
I'm curious about the book, but I'll probably always be skeptical of white authors that win awards for writing about the experiences of "ethnic" people. I know minority writers also win honors, but a whole lot of prize committees seem to salivate over white dudes getting inside the minds of POC. Even authors I…
I think quite a few POC (like myself) are hoping whoever did this isn't "brown." Obviously, chaotic violence like this is repugnant regardless of the perpetrator's race, but it would be a relief to know there wouldn't be any retaliation violence against innocent POC because of the bomber's racial or cultural identity.
As long as it results in him waxing poetic about mental illness, I'm good.
Oh, did you see that restoration that came out a couple years ago?
@avclub-64f027640f63616a277e92096313264f:disqus The only L&O shows still going relatively strong are SVU and UK. But other than that, every spinoff has been cancelled, including the ones without Law and Order in the title.
Oh god, have they done Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" yet?
I thought of that awful outing plot today when I asked a male coworker who I had assumed was straight if he liked men during a discussion of body-building (we both expressed disgust with it) and he said yes. I told him his opinion was more valid, as I'm a lesbian, but I felt like a terrible person for asking. I kept…
My dad loves it, probably because he lives just outside the city limits and can thus make fun of those people he knows while not quite being technically classified as one of them.
I think "This Party Took a Turn for the Douche" is every bit as good as "Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor," but I also live in Portlandia, which has an alarmingly large group of people who fit the former to a t.
Dylan and Dwight Schrute go together like beets, bears, and Battlestar Galactica.
I haven't spent nearly as much time with Fuller's noir as I should. I read an analysis of his films a couple years back, but I was- and still am- focused on The Crimson Kimono, Pickup on South Street, The Naked Kiss, and White Dog.
I still think Leave Her to Heaven is the best color noir, but I can't recall if Technicolor or a Fox exclusive color film and processing was used.
I can't remember if that was before or after Xavin went back to zer home planet. That's still the only time a comic book has made me cry.
