I read Dial H differently than I read other books on my weekly pull list. I flip back and forth more often and take more time on the dialog. There are some strange speech patterns (including, at times, literal gibberish) and lots of allusions to secrets that haven't been revealed yet.
Perdido Street Station is the first of his Bas-Lag novels, which stand as his most all-out wild and creative works. Unfortunately, it's also narratively uneven. There are good lines, scenes, and ideas, but everything feels disconnected. I'd recommend The Scar as an entry point into Bas-Lag.
