If this includes potato chips, I think this might just have something to do with the sedentary lifestyle, and secondarily, because people who eat a bunch of potato chips on the couch tend to be loners.

That's not strange at all. A lot of Indian families have been there for a number of generations. They're not Britishizing their food, they're cooking up Indian food for Indian folks who live in England. Had some pretty amazing Indian food there, too. (Wouldn't say it was "best", though.)

I never knew these were a thing until a couple years ago when someone on the AV Club mentioned them. Despite not knowing they existed, I've made these several times myself. Usually it's because I made a bunch of ground turkey or ground pork to eat with rice, and I had leftover bread.
