Agreed, I didn't get into the first one but gave the new one a shot and that did it.  I haven't heard Angels and Airwaves so I'm not sure about that comparison but I don't hear pretension in it at all, I enjoy the straightforwardness of it.

I blame this song and "All You Need Is Love" for giving me the mistaken impression that the Beatles were not a band I could actually enjoy as anything more than background music.  Glad thing I eventually figured out the secret: listening to their albums in their entirety, not just the singles.
