I don't know if it was groundbreaking for anything good.  While the concept was interesting when you came across it on lite night TV.  You couldn't actually stop and spend any dedicated time on it from week to week.  The general idea was how lazily can we make a show and still have it be funny.

Well to be fair the Simpsons was not that great in its first few seasons.  its arc is very similar to Seinfeld's, the first three seasons had some of the most classic episodes but it was in season four that it hit its grove and became the show we remember.
