Also the show needed to make him less "warm and fuzzy" and remind us he's a violent psychopath after all the NH stuff.

The first 2 seasons were great but then the storylines just got ridiculous and repetitive.  Like Emerald City would be allowed to remain open when people are getting murdered left and right every episode.  At least Beecher-Chris Meloni (can't remember his character's name) gave us some good ho-yay.

At least these other guest stars weren't trotted out in the obnoxious, in your face "Hey look it's J.K. Rowling!" MAD was always sharper on the racism/sexism social commentary stuff.  Plus the tv satires always have to open with a single panel where all the characters introduce themselves, which is always the lamest part of the bit.
