Meryl Streep always nails it, its a bummer this movie didn't have the guts to confront the weird dynamics of Thatcherism.

falls into the same strange pattern as 100 Bullets, in that it 1) draws many, many female characters of all types, shapes and sizes but then 2) makes 90% of them statuesque catalogue-model looking ladies… so that Y gives the impression that the death of men has somehow manifested the beauty standard across the planet.

The thing that really turned me off of enjoying the original is the invincibility of the entire crew. I mean, its a movie clearly aping the Dirty Dozen, and it calls itself the Expendables, so I expected a fun whittling down of badasses until its just like, Stallone and Another Guy (or two.) Instead, the movie

I feel you. I think if they had just gone ahead and layered in some Battle Royale-style superviolence along with those awesome stunts and fight choreography, it really could have been a gonzo classic.

His conspiracy-ish rants are pretty fucking gold. "Weirdo muscle-head" is apt because he at different times embodies either of those things pretty clearly. Ranting about how the US military invaded Afghanistan to take over poppy fields? Pretty weird, yeah. Narrating a human dogfight on UFC? Classic musclehead.
