I find "If" to be Waters' at his finest, in terms of both introspection and self-aggrandizement.  The title suite is bloated, yeah, but my god it's beautifully written and it never fails to give me goosebumps.  "Fat Old Sun" is one of my favorite PF tracks, and the rest of the songs on the album combine to make a

Hm.  I would suggest Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon or King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King.  Both great prog albums with emotions, but as a general principle I agree with @avclub-eaff9f19dbfd5c5a5807b5dbfa656ec9:disqus .

It's one of my favorites, right up there with Meddle and DSOTM.  I don't understand the hate it gets.

Am I a bad person for liking Atom Heart Mother a lot?  Yeah the opening suite is pretentious, but it's good.  And I find the individual songs to be really interesting, especially "If".

I always think of David Carradine.

I agree.  The sheer amount of bizarreness (and the way it meshes well together, although that may just be me) establishes it as a pretty good album in my mind, and pretty essential to a basic understanding of the Melvins too.
