Fair enough. I disagree about the clause; I didn't think the monologue was trying to point out Scully's issues with her male coworkers so much as it confirming their suspicions. But I could've misread it, and I didn't note the other times he describes her; it could be more that I was distracted by the leaden prose.

It actually does change the tone of the story, to the point where losing her turns out to be arguably the point of the whole mess; it raises some interesting thematic concerns (two dudes fighting it out to prove themselves while the one person who actually tried to
