Perhaps they're trying to make up for IMHO, letting Marnie off the hook last season? She killed one of her followers, held others hostage and still got to to off into the great beyond and peace. I think that irked a lot of people.

I think Mal and Wash also synch up in War Stories during SPOILER the torture scene. It shows that Mal can get Wash to focus-and save his life.
