I didn't get through much of His Dark Materials but I really enjoyed The Golden Compass, especially on a second viewing. Where else are you going to see a polar bear get its jaw slapped off in a fight to the death?

I saw them at the 9:30 Club in DC. They grabbed an audience member and told him to chug 24 Dr. Pepper cans by the time they ended their set and they'd give him $1,000 cash. Rules were that he couldn't throw up. He lost terribly, but still kinda neat.
