It's not strictly pop culture, but I read James Watson's memoir The Double Helix on the discovery of the structure of DNA for a class.  It was a pretty entertaining read, and seemed like it would be pretty accessible even if one wasn't very familiar with the scientific concepts discussed within.  And it also functions

SANNE!!!!!  Yay, Sanne's back!  I can't tell you how unreasonably overjoyed I am about this.

@Trurl Eh, I thought Cobain's cover was good.  Nirvana's Unplugged is pretty fantastic, possibly their best album.

I read somewhere that he apparently remembers almost nothing of recording that album.  Pretty impressive that someone could be that fucked up and make something as great as Station to Station.

The Man Who Sold the World might be my favorite Bowie album.  It's almost like a prog album at times.

"WHAT KIND OF DRUGS DO YOU TAKE?!?!?!?!"

Yeah, I also found out about Saga through the AVC, mostly from a bunch of people (including yourself, I think) mentioning it in comments sections of stuff. I've been wanting to read a current comics series with some merit, in my fairly recent attempt to get into comics and such, and Saga seemed like a pretty

It's good to see that Denny's found something other than drugs to sell for "money to pay off some stuff".

NBCSN is awesome.  So much better than ESPN, because there's way less loud obnoxious talking heads pretending that loud obnoxious shouting counts as sports analysis.  Oh, and NBCSN is aware of the fact that hockey is a sport, and they realize the fact that, yes, there are indeed plenty of NHL fans who care about the

Happy Birthday!  And congrats on getting the number/hand-to-the-face.

Yeah, the thing about the History Channel (at least in the US), is that, at this point, you should probably ignore the word "History" in its title and replace it with "Reality TV Show/Aliens/Apocalypse/Cryptozoology/platform for pseudo-Biblical scholarship/Godwin's Law."  I'll watch Pawn Stars when I've nothing better

Lecturing on the problematic nature of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl whilst borderline-passout-drunk seems more impressive than regrettable, in my opinion.

It was a weird weekend for me.  I ended up watching way too much Ancient Aliens on the History channel on Saturday, while waiting to move into my college dorm.  It was kind of hilarious to see all the logical fallicies at play, the non-scientific application of "theory", the assumption that when they talk about

I thought Earthling was pretty good, and Bowie has a handful of albums that I could care less about.  Hours is awful, though.

I'm a formerly-religious atheist, but I'd heard of Dawkins' and Hitchens' stuff when I was still a Christian because I wasn't completely ignorant about atheism and the arguments for it.  I imagine a ton of Christians have heard of their books.  Moreover, arguments like some of those made by Dawkins and Hitchens, and

@avclub-130f14e3e5c0263f013b56d8c212f26a:disqus  Yeah, some of them were fun as hell when I was in middle school, and I'll probably read something else of his at some point in the future when I want to read something that's just dumb fun, and where I can laugh at how clueless Cussler is with thinking that all the

It's interesting to see how Gaiman's take on Beowulf manifested itself in both the computer-animated Beowulf film from a few years ago that he helped write the script for, and in his American Gods novella.  I haven't read the book Grendel but I know that that's another work that interprets Grendel as being more

@avclub-d1348cfe54a94fe6f986775cedd75fdd:disqus I actually thought Deathly Hallows pt. 1 was really good, even if not a lot happened.  I thought it was probably better than part two, which was mostly just crazy action happening on top of crazy action, and a final duel between Harry and Voldemort only slightly less

Oh, I've found a decent amount of time for reading extracurricular stuff in college, but I'm a reasonably slow reader, and I really need to and have a good semester GPA-wise, so unfortunately, my plans to read a ton of shit might suffer for that.  But I'll definitely be doing my best to read a few non-class-related

Always glad to help stave off Armageddon.
