And it didn't need to be confusing, either.  In a lot of ways, the episode felt like a stall tactic to me, making us wait until "the exciting winter finale" next week.

Bell's photo of Nina didn't give Walter hope.  It did the opposite because it meant that even though Bell did love Nina, that love was not strong enough to keep Bell's mad scientist side in check.  Walter's now afraid that Peter's love also won't be enough.

I tend to agree.  I thought Sugar as Frenchy and Blaine as Teen Angel were pretty accurate casting choices, though.
