I love how no one really puts that much effort into looking for the compass in the midst of all the treasure and how that lack of effort doesn't matter since the giant has the compass all along.

In the book, the doctor definitely did not consider the monster to be part of his family.  It's interesting that Once upon a Time reversed that aspect of the story.
