As regards the tainted wine, the assassin seemed to me to take a pretty big swig even though he knew it was poisoned.  (The last time he had to drink wine for the pope, Rodrigo made him take a big swig, so maybe he got in the habit.  Also, he wanted to die anyway as a martyr.)  I don't remember Rodrigo taking more…
