Seattle/Portland.
The oft-quoted line about "Ill" - "Three Jerks Make a Masterpiece" - forgot what publication it was from.
The fall of 1994
"Pulp Fiction" for its technicolor explosion of high-and-low-brow popular culture, and "Clerks", because it showed me that not all guys had to be sensitive ponytail men, and not all women were dress-over-jeans third-wave feminists.
True Story
I worked at a failed Internet-based business in the late '90s, and there was this co-worker in the tech(?) department who looked like Mr. Blossom and wore the same flannel shirt every day. I referred to him as "Creepy neighbor from 'Home Alone'" behind his back.
Given the low-budget look of "Meatballs" (it was produced by a small Canadian film company, if I recall), it's probably more of an independent film than some of the other stuff that IFC has been showing ("Crank"?)
Aspiring Music Supervisor
I'm hoping that they include this song in the film:
Watched "The Trip" (enjoyable, but not the British laugh-fest that I'd hoped it would be), and "The King's Speech" (good, but not great - Harvey Weinstein's Academy lobbying strikes again!) After viewing the season premiere of "True Blood", I caught the last half of "Meatballs" on IFC (it really sucks that they're…
I thought of another one
Sometime around the release of "The Fisher King" Harry Nilsson cleans up his act, changes his mind about touring, and does small-scale concerts (either with a full band, or just him "unplugged" with a piano - which one would be better?)
Kane, Nolan, Thunders
While I'm happy that David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are receiving a regular paycheck (and probably making more money now than in the early '70s), it would have been great to see at least 80% of the original New York Dolls in a reunion sometime during the alt-rock '90s.
Another '80s Actor/Nolan Film Connection
Albeit a lesser-known actor. Roger Rees was in "The Prestige".
Calling Dr. Hendricks
"People, if you can't act like adults you'll be treated like children who can't act like adults." Perfect. Also, I like the reaction that follows when the student insists that he counted the ballots correctly: "Can it, Fouch" or something like that.
Alfalfa as part of the ensemble (when he wore the cowboy outfits) = good.
Alfalfa as leader/co-leader of the Gang = not good.
Yeah, wasn't Billy Idol the first "Celebrity Cyberpunk"?
Apparently "Bass player for Jane's Addiction" is the musical equivalent of those job postings on Monster that appear and reappear (with the text unchanged) every three months or so.
Let's hope Hustler Video puts out another entry in the "Who's Nailin' Paylin" series the same week this mini-series airs. It will be the (HBO) People vs. Larry Flynt!
Boy George
Never thought about his sexuality during Culture Club's brief US reign. Duran Duran wore makeup. The guy from A Flock of Seagulls had a wild hairstyle. I just thought of him as an '80s pop version of an outrageous performer a la Alice Cooper. I didn't catch his "Thanks, America, you know a good drag queen…
I can imagine the discussion the movie producers had around the table: "What early '90s alternative song can we use where we won't have to pay a significant licensing fee?"
I hate myself for knowing this, but in the very first season of "The Real World" in NYC, there's a scene where the musician cast member and his band does a radio station interview, and the DJ is Matt Pinfield. He looked older in 1992 than he does now (had the Kyle Gass male pattern baldness thing going on.)
I have more Soup Dragons than Sonic Youth on my iPod, and I'm not ashamed to say so.
Seconded. Kendall is rocking the Mike Patton/"Mothers Milk"-era RHCP look.
