I'm not going to defend Dan Savage's record on the war except to point out the obvious fact that if everyone who was against the war *now* had actually been against the war when the buildup was actually happening, the war would never have happened.

Well that's just it — the issue is that she's said more genuinely offensive things and instead here she gets criticized for not liking black-and-white silent films. (Okay, seriously, own up — how many people here are actually fans of black-and-white silent films? Even among "film buffs" it's probably a pretty small…

@avclub-734ffb84cfa214922893511fae356b45:disqus Uh, no. Bush didn't get a majority or a plurality. Gore got more votes than Bush.

Lest I be accused of making shit up out of thin air this question deserves a better answer than "Bits and pieces from different places". His skepticism of the idea that some people are gay and some aren't — and that, instead, all fifteen-year-old boys want to "fuck everything that moves" — is most easily found in this…

Re: the third quote, the fact that iGadgets can in fact be recycled (a process that itself costs a certain amount of energy and waste) doesn't suddenly make it not wasteful to get rid of a perfectly functional device in favor of the newer shinier one a few years later.

It's not just that Frank is gay, it's that Frank is totally on the opposite end of the spectrum from Mike and really rabid and vocal about it.

Of all the people who make jokes about not judging this-or-that celebrity because it's so hard to be so deeply in the closet (Tom Cruise springs to mind) OSC actually deserves those jokes and that pity — real or sarcastic — most. He's pretty much admitted in full that he's a closeted gay man who forced himself to…

@onaccounta:disqus I don't question that film actors can and do gain a lot of benefit from watching films and observing other actors, but I think it's actually a misconception a lot of cinephiles hold that to be a great film actor you have to be a cinephile and/or film critic, and that the craft of acting has much to…

Wait, which of your favorite Kubrick or Polanski movies were the black and white silent ones?

I think the angry people here would be surprised how many contemporary Americans they admire lack any interest in black and white silent films. I think it's safe to say that President Obama himself and many other holders of high office probably lack any interest in black and white silent films.

Also, the sense of shock/betrayal isn't comparable. Bush won a comfortable victory in 2004 after *losing the popular vote* in 2000 (this is not contested) and almost losing the electoral vote before an incredibly controversial intervention by the Supreme Court.
