If you're a Christian and you believe that Jesus literally existed then that complicates this, of course.

@avclub-3e91970f771a2c473ae36b60d1146068:disqus Maybe, but that contradicts other things like the fact that the Endless go along with calling the monotheistic God literally the Creator of the universe (which the Lucifer series also treats as a fundamental, bedrock fact about the world).

I am a fan of superhero comics who wants to see the great deal that is good and interesting in superhero comics redeemed from being tarred by the brush that it's all vapid zip-bang-pow adrenaline hits aimed at the id of teenage boys.

The fact that Jaka's Story was so good and so many people fell in love with Jaka as a result of it and Sim later said this was a massive misunderstanding and you're supposed to hate Jaka and think of her with contempt is a sign of how around-the-bend Sim is — he can accurately observe women and empathetically describe

You know, I actually really really like the attempts of the mainstream DCU to integrate Sandman into its proceedings, as long as they're respectful and not BS like the thing where they tried to retcon Gaiman's Death into the "Peaceful Death of the Righteous" or whatever.

I won't commit to this, but I will say that there may be a hint of a message here that only those who have wallowed in the very depths of the pit of Despair are the ones who know the true value of hope, who have had their hope tested, the light shining brighter against the darkness, bla bla bla etc.

Dream always being a guy is one of those things that seems like a bedrock part of Neil Gaiman's mythology and its interesting relationship with gender — I think IRL Gaiman is a pretty progressive guy when it comes to such things, but when doing ancient mythology you can't get away from the fact that in most ancient

I completely disagree that a new reader would assume that Gaiman just made Element Girl up — it's too weird and too specific and too kind of old-school-superhero-campy to feel like an original creation. I'd argue the same about the details we get about the Hector Hall Sandman and the Dream Dome and all that.

A lot of people also don't remember that the "Lords of Order and Chaos" introduced in the keys-to-Hell arc are actually from the DC Comics mythology, despite being rather generic-sounding. Gaiman put them in specifically to try to redeem the concept and do something more interesting with it — the idea that the cosmos

What about the whole storyline revolving around Element Girl? I remember all three of the actual remaining fans of the original Metamorpho, the Element Man were actually offended by that (which struck me as being a lot like the handful of honest fans of Space Ghost who are offended by Space Ghost Coast to Coast).
