It's problematic because Palmer has cultivated a public image that is, I think, deliberately polarizing — polarizing in such a way that tons of her haters will be horrible misogynists, and yet there are still plenty of reasons to be put off by her that are not inherently misogynistic. It's a great way to guarantee

@LurkyMcLurkerson:disqus There's a huge difference between the amount of labor that goes into "writing" for fun, "playing music" for fun", "drawing pictures" for fun, etc., and the labor that goes into doing it for a living.

@TashaRobinson:disqus It's been said a million times, but what you are envisioning is FALSE. It may be the impression that Palmer seeks to convey to her audience members at the shows, but if your situation were actually analogous to her situation there would be no call for an audition tape and no interview/evaluation

You know, one of the things I dislike about Kickstarter is that, rather than democratize and level the artistic playing field like it promised, it's if anything served to *inflate* the cult of celebrity that poisons the art world and feed certain people's monstrous egos and the idea that some people are inherently a

I'm more sad than angry. The relationship a lot of aspiring artistic types have with prospective employers feels a lot like an abusive romantic relationship (an awkward simile to make, but then again there's a lot of actual art — songs/scripts/essays/etc. — that makes that direct comparison).

I never understood the idea that finding someone who was a good "spiritual fit" with your "team" required that you not pay them money for doing work for you. I don't understand or like it when nonprofits and charities and churches pull that crap to exploit the idea of an unpaid internship, and I like it even less when

They were assholes first for letting wages for delivery people stagnate to the point where it's basically unpaid labor, including frequently not remunerating them for the cost of gas that's basic to their profession, thus requiring them to depend on tips for a living. Then they were bigger assholes for starting to

What she does is not "jamming", and abuse of the term "jam" and the ethos behind it is, IMO, far creepier and uglier than the abuse of the idea of "gaining exposure" you quote.

The fact that Neil Gaiman was raised in Scientology isn't really a secret; what's murkier is his current relationship to the cult, but it does seem to be creepily close and it seems unlikely he could just up and marry someone not connected to it without some sort of reaction from them.

If it were actually the case that people hiring private tutors "on the side" and paying them slave-labor-level wages were deeply cutting into the bottom line of actual teachers, because parents had the right to just yank their kids out of school and have them tutored at home by tutors making $10/hr — then yeah, this
