There really is no good way to have the conversation about the simple fact that so many people really, really love doing something that they just aren't good enough at to make other people enjoy it and probably never will be.

The most depressing thing about actually buckling down and taking classes and trying to be an actor was meeting all the people who were in fact much better actors than I was with way more experience doing it who had still never, in the course of their long lives and careers, even come close to making money at it.

They had this debate over the sad, somewhat unsettling spectacle of William Hung's skyrocketing to "fame" and "fortune" as a result of his American Idol audition several years ago.

The sense of the word "artless" doesn't even have to do with that sense of the word "art"; when you're saying "artless" you mean "art" in the sense of "craft, skill, deftness, competence".

You'd do better making your measure of utils not be dollars and stop talking about my lifetime income level — what the hell is the point of piling up all that money in my bank account if I never spend time spending money on doing things I actually enjoy? To be the richest guy in the cemetery, to paraphrase Steve Jobs?…

The webcomics "community", such as it is, went through an enormous amount of drama and nerdrage over this a while back, and it's still left its scars on the scene. Google "John Solomon" and his "Your Webcomic Is Bad and You Should Feel Bad" blog if you're interested in seeing the trainwreck that resulted.

Also, ISTR Andromeda did that same alternate dark timeline shtick *multiple times* with a different bizarre, twisted take on the characters we'd come to know and love each time.
This failed to reinvigorate viewers' interest in the show — well, it failed on me and from the ratings it also looks like it failed in general…

Objection: I thought Number One in The Cage was pretty good — more attractive than Lwaxana Troi, and not just because she was younger then — and I really disliked Janeway.

I don't hate the episode (it's the one with the guys whose faces are black-and-white cookies, right?) but I think Battlefield falls on the side of bad enough to be annoying without actually being so bad it's hilarious and awesome how bad it is. Heavyhanded political messages, in fact, do a lot to drain the "fun" out…

Naming the test space shuttle Enterprise is an issue of Star Trek's cultural significance, not of its actual influence on "science". The Space Race was not "inspired" by Star Trek; it's the other way around.

Just because I'm starting to suspect that you're the kind of annoying Trekkie I didn't like when I considered myself a Trekkie — you're not actually giving Star Trek credit for actually advancing science and technology, right? You're not saying that cell phones exist because of the imaginary communicators on Star…
