i have to rewatch 'the wire,' but i agree with you - the final season is clunky and felt like simon just getting back at the newspaper industry he hates so much, but the montage was perfect for that show. the entire series was about how, as one detective james mcnulty put it, 'shit never fuckin' changes'

someone has touched upon this, i can't remember who or where i read it, but those 20-30 seconds of silence were so impactful because 'the shield' barely ever takes a break in the action.
