There are plenty of examples of stories that are padded or denied closure, just because the series can be milked for more money. You have to admire J.K. Rowling for insisting that the Harry Potter series had to end — and then writing an epilogue that will make re-starting the series very difficult.

In Defense of Sequels
Sequels and trilogies and much longer series are certainly common in SF and Fantasy. Writer CJ Cherryh expained once that this is due in large part to the amount of work involved in imagining and presenting an entire, internally consistent world or solar system.
