His speaking chinese was hardly unnecessary. It's all part of the overarching plot I'd imagine, as it was revealed last week that he could now speak russian, which he couldn't before he disappeared. Obviously he wasn't alone on the island (as the teaser at the end explicitly showed) and someone trained him.
