As @avclub-4efc93ce552c200ce4389a07ef02514c:disqus suggests, give it time. Virtually no great war movies were made during the wars they depict, it usually takes a decade or more distance. Three Kings aside, the second Gulf War nullified any distance from the first.

The all-volunteer military is to blame. Edit: (Sorry @VBFan, didn't see your post, you sum up my point well).

Not to mention, the sculpture of Richies' head she comes up with in the video is supremely ugly (referenced later in the episode, when I wasn't entirely sure which head was who, beyond Jess' long hair).

The Arrival, an American movie with an American protagonist, with the actual invasion occurring in Mexico and (I think) other tropical locations around the world. Not a full-on military-style assault, but I think it qualifies as an alien invasion.

Even with DVR I caught glimpses of them. I'm mainly surprised they're up to 4 already. Though I played Marathon way back in the day I never took up with Halo.

Were they watching the pre-Code version? I'm guessing that the vine-clothed woman tied to a pole and alligators indicates it was pre-Code. I haven't seen it but wikipedia indicates that was cut out for the post-Code releases.

I thought she'd left Stillwater, but I'm not up on it, either. Regardless, she lived there for quite a while. The tony part of Stillwater probably isn't the best place to pick up a good Marge Gunderson accent, though.
