No, they do not fare well at all. Most of them don't come off much better in TNG, with the exceptions of Tomalak and the defector from the episode of the same name.
I don't think she was full of bullshit. I think she was exactly right that Gene wouldn't have approved, and she was committed to carrying out her late husband's vision. Nothing wrong with that, in and of itself.

One area they definitely would have improved: basically all the TNG movies felt the need to make Picard into Action Man for reasons beyond all understanding, and that (in my opinion) is one of the major causes of their diminishing returns.
