I remember it airing on Canada's Comedy Central a year or so after 9/11, preceded by a message from the network dedicating the episode to those who lost their lives. An odd tribute, but better than pretending it never happened at all.

"Mars Needs Moms" was the preceding flop, I think.
Come to think of it, Mission to Mars was pretty shit, too.
Should've called it "Brown."
The Badass Games is where I usually recommend people start (possibly because it's where I started). Short story arc, contains most of the main characters, makes for a nice little introduction to the world of the strip.
@avclub-98470000dfdbcbccf2c7cd42d80955ae:disqus is that what happened? I had no idea. I finally ran out of goodwill for Onstad after the first few Achewood 2.0 strips were so awful. Sorry to hear his wife left, but that does explain some of the death spiral the comic went through.
I haven't watched B5 in 10+ years, but I remember loving it as a teenager. What really attracted me to the show was the emphasis on continuity and character growth - big things did change, and characters evolved for better and worse, which was all pretty rare for TV at the time.
There is no place to start with the Laurel Canyon Sound, because the Laurel Canyon Sound has no beginning, and no end. Laurel Canyon is forever.
I loved the brain-melting awesomeness of FLCL, but I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point to anyone. Scott Tobias mentioned Watchmen was a bad place for him to begin because it was about deconstructing superhero myths; a lot of Fooly Cooly is about smashing up anime tropes.
Like @avclub-0ae7484a9f3bbd2a21df420050c032ae:disqus said, Vonnegut's a pretty quick read. If you're a "five-books-on-the-go-type" (I sympathize) you'll probably find that Vonnegut's what you rip through while taking a break from something heavier.
I'm kind of amazed that Mohd hasn't posted a big list of anime recommendations yet.
Maybe he died.
You could start by fucking things in your house. Then move on to the immediate neighbourhood.
I wish I'd bought more books from the online store before it closed down/Achewood imploded/whatever the hell happened to Onstad.
Do you know Todd?
I read some of Phipps' TV Club writeups of "New Who" (is that what we're supposed to call it?) and thought it sounded interesting, but… Seven seasons, different showrunners, the actor playing the Doctor changes something like two seasons in… I couldn't figure out where to start, really.
I imagine the pitch was "like Freaky Friday, but with more Auschwitz."
Dear @Nudeviking:disqus , if your partner refuses to dress up as a screech siren with a ruby pistol in her garter, you have my permission to haunt bop dives looking for vamps on the make.
The best kind of murder is a moidah.
@avclub-fec1b8d3fbc08f27a84e5a334d45bb5a:disqus Maybe as an impulse buy, like if it's selling next to the checkout line at the grocery store.
Typical big-time studios, always putting marketing ahead of art.
