I'm pretty sure Joe wasn't in the band in '02, but yes, it sounds like you caught them on a particularly bad night.  I've been lucky enough to see this band 6 or so times, and they've always been varying degrees of outstanding.  I recommend giving them another shot.

Pack Up the Cats is still my favorite album of theirs but they've really racked up an incredibly strong catalog.  I'd recommend Whatever Happened to PJ Soles? next.  "Buffalo Trace" is maybe the best thing they've ever done.

Bunheads has developed into a pretty fantastic show.  I've been binging on the season this past month and it's turned into quite the hilarious little hour of television.
