Judging by how close this election has become, I am starting to think the Founders were not wrong.

Why is it that the election is decided on the basis of electoral college and not on the basis of popular vote? Doesn't it make more sense in the principle that every vote counts instead of it being like if you are in a red state and want to vote Democrat your vote has no basically no value?
