Well, the one where Data started dreaming wasn't -great- but I wouldn't call it terrible.
The episode where Data started dreaming. His painting became a means to explicate his creativity, then, due to the dream, so it did become a plot point. Just like Riker's 'bone (heh) was a plot point in clueing him in that the false future was false, before he saw the picture of Minuet.
