The idea that mourning is private feels very no-longer-living-in-a-village to me, where you aren't geographically close to family, perhaps your close friends have scattered, and so you don't expect any kind of community of mourning when someone close to you passes.  Your father dies, you spend some time at home

There were also a lot more black sitcoms on the air when Friends was on, like Living Single and Martin, which I forgot to mention.  But there aren't any more struggling networks, so no one is "catering" to black folks anymore.  As soon as UPN (and earlier, FOX) got more successful they dropped the black sitcoms right

This is truth right here.

Well this is what I get for not looking at AV Club this morning.

can't trust, smile, etc.

The Unusuals had a FANTASTIC cast playing incredible characters, but unfortunately the writers had no idea what to do with them, and the procedure part of the plots were frequently idiotic.  I shouldn't be able to figure shit out ten minutes before Jeremy Renner does, is what I'm saying.

Yep, Joel is the reason I watched the pilot, but the show is the reason I stayed.

The thing about getting these as emails is that they end up in your inbox hours after they've been posted on the site, which is sort of annoying to be honest.  I even get the notice in google reader that it's been posted before I get the email, and reader lags like a mofo.

Yes, that moment is my favorite parody-of-the-musical moment, especially the weird high note he goes to when he sings "doooo."

I did find it odd that NPR wasn't brought up, given how early they embraced the form. And I wouldn't be surprised if they do bring in revenue in terms of pledges, from people who can't get that programming on their local station, or just want to time-shift their listening, not to mention the podcasts they have that

I agree with GK that if you're not playing instruments then dance is essential, because the whole boy-band fake sign language thing is pretty terrible.

I think one of the things about Tumblr and music—and it should be noted that many, many music critics are quite active on tumblr and there's a bit of music criticism that seems to only exist there—is that of all the various social media/blogging/social blogging platforms, tumblr is by far the easiest to post

Someone I think at EW cornered the producer about this and he was like well, the white guys like white ladies, what are you gonna do?  And then they said, um, cast a black Bachelor? But by then the producers were locked into sourcing Bachelor(ette)s from the previous casts, so that was the end of that.

I saw the VH1 dating show parodies long before I bothered to actually watch an episode of the Bachelor (I tuned in some night between HIMYM and Castle) and I was shocked at how sincere it tries to be.  It makes the show incredibly uncomfortable.  Rounding up a whole bunch of girls and going on ridiculous dates and

Well, that's what happens when you cast people who have been contestants on the show already and still think that going through the process from the other side will get them anything other than more People magazine covers.

Yeah, whether he lives or not, I don't think anyone thinks he's going to be hanging around Kentucky.

Don't be so disappointed in the internet, GK—I'm pretty sure that AD mashup has been floating around since the spring schedule was announced, so a couple of months, anyway.  Not sure why it's suddenly resurfacing now, though.

I'm with Hear God Laugh—I don't know that every season of the show has to be exponentially better than the last.  Season 2 was amazing, and being better than that would be a tough call.  That doesn't mean the show is in decline, though, or the best years are behind it or whatever.  In fact, I'm not really sure what

I disagree—I really don't like it when things that would be remarked on in real life aren't remarked on in the text.  I loved how Veronica Mars acknowledged that she's a pretty girl (thanks to the showrunner's previous experience on Dawson where Joey was supposed to be plain), I love that the cast on HIMYM laugh at
