You are most definitely wrong about the latter. (although admittedly it's not for everyone)

I always felt like Kate shone through as the 'true protagonist' in the end. She even got her rightful ending by leaving the island, and Jack's karma for being a total jackass hit him straight in the face by, well, killing him.

A lot of characters from Buffy: Anya, Spike, Harmony, Jenny was meant to die much earlier than she did, Xander in the pilot episode, Andrew, etc
