I agree with your take on the book passages, and they're interesting enough to not be tedious.
I think the narrator cynically notes that a lot of the hype came from the mythology surrounding the "author," and not necessarily the quality of the book.

Yeah my analogy was, Tara's death was like the death of a friend of My Friend.  She seemed ok and I felt kinda bad, but it didn't really impact me directly. 
But Fred's death was like My Friend dying. 

Also because Fred is the one good, pure, and relatively innocent character.
But those people die too, often in a way they don't deserve, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. If that's not a Whedonesque theme, I don't know what is.
