I think the Cardassians would actually be at least as adept as the Dominion at doing a show like Crossfire as a propagandistic showtrial—er doing a show like Crossfire.

When I was in high school there was this kid that used to make fun of the dialogue in Power Rangers:Blue Ranger (smart geeky one): Affirmative!
Everyone else: What does that mean?!

And audiences should also prepare themselves to control the nervous impulse to make a preemptive strike.  If they can't contain themselves until addressed directly by the performer then they're not ready for live entertainment.

@avclub-57d020e695d539d5ef513aa0be1a18e9:disqus , yeah, (SPOILERS, just in case) but isn't the name reveal, the fact that they're secret, and their intentions a plot twist in Inquisition?  In fact, one of the problems with Into Darkness is how crappily that secret is kept.  Presumably, now everyone knows who Section

I think DS9 is my all time favorite TV series because it gets the balance right between serialization and episodic, between character and plot, between lightness and darkness.  A lot of shows influenced by DS9 go a little too dark and too serialized for my tastes and I think that the characters and the show's

Maybe that was more an homage to the multi-colored food cubes from TOS?

Yeah, the Dominion certainly wants at least the appearance of a benevolent dictatorship, so they make some concessions they expect will be politically popular.  Plus, they have the eyesight issue as mentioned a few times throughout the thread.

I think the range there was a little closer than firing into a valley.  I have to think that would be a factor.  But the phasers could also be set to overload to work as a makeshift bomb to take out the equivalent of a deck or two of a starship.  I wonder what kind of damage the phasers could have done if they threw

I think he likes science fiction as a setting, but he's more interested in the character-based drama within that setting.  He was clearly a fan of TOS and other science fiction shows as a kid, but yeah, he's not someone particularly interested in weird concepts, like say a Brannon Braga or Joe Menosky.  The cool thing

Maybe something more Cardassian sounding like "Zimar Ma'an Conduits"

Now THAT's something Gene Wilder can say is a cynical cash grab.

They more than made up for it in the awesome space battles.  I remember how excited I was in 1997 when I saw what CGI could really contribute to such scenes as Miranda-class starships got blown apart exposing the bulky beams that made up their no longer sturdy frames.

SPOILERS There will be consequences for such gleeful sadism.  You wouldn't like Damar when he's sober.

Well, it's not an acronym as it doesn't form a word, but I think Ferengi all over the galaxy shudder with fear when they hear the abbreviation "F-C-A."

@avclub-d831790d8f05421b59c75761f104065d:disqus , no problem!  I don't exactly have my Companion at the ready when I'm at work, so I just figured I'd mention what I remembered of the interview.

The cancellation of ENT was largely due to studio and network politics and a regime change at Paramount.  As I understand it, no matter how good the show would get the show's demise was planned as early as the third season.

It wasn't entirely an AV Club fabrication if Google auto complete is to be believed.

According to the tombstone in Deathly Hallows Part 1 the movies take place at the same times as the books, from 1991-1998.

How do you replace a Massachusetts college with a Massachusetts actor?

I know.  Dorn's hilarious but the build wouldn't work as a Johnny Cochrane type of character.
