It hink it's actually a pretty good place to start. The prose is pretty accessible, and the carnage less brutal than Blood Meridian or, well, most of his other works. It's a good, entertaining, moving story.

Actually, that's pretty much spot on.
One that I recall from this period was the animated version of Russell Hoban's The Mouse and His Child. Without really remembering what it was about, I have a strong, bleak visual impression that makes me feel vaguely melancholy to this day.

Ditto. It's not my favorite of his stories, but with a little opening out I could imagine it becoming a quite effective film.
This could be a completely idiosyncratic reaction, but Against the Day ended up as one of the most personally affecting of his books for me. It's problematic and difficult, but I felt it definitely had an emotional center.
