This reads like a Robert Wilson theater piece.

I've always wished Karloff had gotten more non-horror roles.  He sort of ended up defining "sinister" for the talkie era, but it would have been nice to see him get to flex some other muscles.

The fact that one just falls in while the others keep milling is a great, almost offhand touch.

Not to mention the film's treatment of black people as actual people, rather than as pop-eyed caricatures.  (A feat which White Zombie, for all of its fascination, can't quite manage.)
