I've always felt "Casting the Runes" is the best crafted (if not the absolute scariest) of the stories. "The Wailing Well" is maybe kind of rough as they go but it's still great, and really quite alarming.
I grew up on them— that one prevented many attempts to get to sleep in my youth. Though that is a pretty funny story as well, thanks largely to your namesake's efforts. (The lifesaving competition etc.)
