That could have been a version of the same game.  (Mine also had Tholians spinning webs made of "#" symbols and an experimental deathray).  It was on an ancient version of DOS and was probably cooked up by the same MIT students who wrote Colossal Caves/Adventure.

Pale Fire would be rough on Kindle I expect.  I'm not sure if there's one correct way to read it— I did what the introduction suggested and that was actually pretty rewarding.  (For more fun in that vein try The Dictionary of the Khazars.  I had to come up with a whole system of rules to read that.)
