@drdarke:disqus : Well, the unkinder critics (largely British) actually used the term "ripped off" when discussing The Tommyknockers, but since King's referenced Quatermass elsewhere (I think he even has a story called "Hob's End") I would suspect it was conscious homage or semiconscious influence.

Nigel Kneale's work is great, though beyond this movie he never had much of a chance at hitting the mainstream US market. (Until Stephen King borrowed Quatermass and the Pit for The Tommyknockers.)

That surprises me a good deal actually, since it seems like that would fall right in the areas where he's criticized Lynch in past. And as you point out, that was hardly a movie that was universally praised either. Huh.
