Especially because the Rick James sketch in particular was so over-quoted that it drove Chappelle up the wall.  Imagine being called a "bitch" every time you went outside.

I'm guessing that if you're interested in reading the comics at all, you have enough knowledge of Batman to read DKR.  For what it's worth, my only Batman knowledge prior to reading DKR came from the following:

So wait, Dark Knight Returns isn't even a "next step"?  Out of the three Batman tales I've read (Year One, DKR, and The Killing Joke), Dark Knight Returns is the most thematically rich, has a great plot, and has some good satire to boot.  I guess some people might be turned off by Frank Miller's worldview, but it fits

Nope on Mastodon.  The Hunter was great.  Give it another listen.  I know the first two songs sound like radio-metal, but the rest of the album is killer noodly-doodly goodness. It's basically Crack the Skye with tighter writing.  "Stargasm" in particular is probably the best space-metal song that Mastodon's done.
