I thought it was a hip-hop remake of The Love Bug
Coulda fooled me.
Fun fact: In order to combat the negative portrayal he gave to marijuana in the first song, he made a pro-marijuana "remix" just last year to support legalization!
Ugh, people need to stop forcing me to re-evaluate movies that I completely ignored because they have a bad reputation. I ONLY HAVE SO MUCH TIME, PEOPLE!
This reminds me of a series of tweets from a comedian I follow ( @azalben ) about a YA book he wants to write based in a post-apocalyptic world where boys are confusing. I'll just reproduce it here:
"What was it like before the world changed," asked Olaina, looking at
the ruined landscape. "What was it like before…
So wait, should I not be reading this thread then!? TELL ME WHAT TO DO!
I think we have to be honest with how we (for lack of a better word) quantify what works and what doesn't in art/entertainment. And just be exact in our language. The breathtaking visuals and intensely enjoyable soundtrack "outweigh" the lack of emotional involvement the film is able to provide. Someone else could…
I got in an argument with a guy on imdb who was claiming that Snowpiercer was Fantasy and not Science Fiction, where I was just claiming it wasn't particularly "Hard" Science Fiction (cue Party Down reference). Anywho, we definitely boiled it down to the fact that he thinks it's not science fiction because we never…
Whoa, for a second I read this as Spaced Invaders. Thank god.
Rudy Leverett gets into that a bit with his ancestors as well. "Well my great grandfather was anti-secessionist, and you didn't see HIM deserting!" Yes, it's true… this first revisionist, less favorable view of Newton Knight was written by the great grandson of a man Knight killed.
Yes, that's exactly what I am trying to say
I don't know, a really basic (usually for high schoolers) introduction to the idea of multiple historical interpretations is from this book: http://www.amazon.com/After…
See, you're confusing historical fact with historical interpretation. I don't think any of the evidence stating that Knight was not present at the Battle of Vicksburg is particularly compelling. Neither do other historians that I have mentioned several times.
Yes, I'd prefer your platitudes to actual facts concerning what we do or don't know. Before Leverett's account in '84 there was very little doubt that Jones County actually seceded and that Knight was probably at The Battle of Vicksburg. But some post-revisionist comes along and now everyone that disagrees with him…
Michael Fassbender wasn't the villain of 12 Years a Slave? Crazy! Have you not seen Drum or Mandingo?
Again, you're associating a book by Victoria Bynum with "proof". If it's so definitively proven, then why doesn't Michael B. Ballard have any issues with it? Do you realize how subjective history can be? This isn't something that's 100% on the record. Interpretations of history change every day (if they didn't,…
Yea, I prefer my villains 2-dimensional as well. If you ain't a Nazi or an unrepentant slave-owner, get out of my movies!
I thought it was actually just one battle (Vicksburg). And it's not definitive he wasn't there. I thought the jury was still out since he was a part of the group of soldiers who deserted AFTER that battle. And although it's probable that the county didn't actually secede, there are still newspapers from the time…
Do you actually know how they "changed" history? They made his relationship with his mistress "romantic" instead of "philandering". That's not exactly science fiction. Especially considering they're buried next to each other.
He looks like the aliens from Battleship.
