I read the book yonks ago and enjoyed it, although for the life of me I can't remember how different it was the movie - would I be right in thinking that the book was a bit more gritty?

Stan Tippins. Original lead singer for pre-Mott group Silence, demoted to roadie when manager Guy Stevens brought in Ian Hunter to front the band. I don't think Stan does any backing vocals on the studio take of "Dudes," but he did backing vocals for live performances. As did Bowie, at least once, in a 1972…
He knows where his dick's at. Just like Big Al.
Really, my biggest gripe against "Absolute Beginners" (the movie, not the song) is that its failure was a major factor in the bankruptcy of Goldcrest Studios, which resulted in the TV series "Robin of Sherwood" getting cancelled.
Worthy additions:
"Return to Oz" - the movie that revealed that, when you don't stop to pick up weirdos and break into song, it only takes about 2 minutes to get from Munchkinland to the Emerald City.
The masses in "The Running Man" are assholes. Even BEFORE Richards is publicly vindicated, they turn their allegiance to him and cheer him on against the Stalkers. For all they know, he IS the Butcher of Bakersfield, but once he starts kicking ass, they treat him like a hero.
…or "Lock Up," which, as far as 80s Stallone movies go, boasts an incredibly interesting supporting cast (Sizemore, Donald Sutherland, John Amos, Sonny Landham, etc).
If Don Mancini had his way in 1987, the series would have been campy - or at least, more comedic - from the very beginning. His original script for the first movie was supposedly much more satirical about the children's toy/advertising industry, and Chucky (or "Buddy," as he was in the script) came alive because of…
My pals and I went to the cinema to see "H20" on our last day of high school. I remember being pretty psyched about it - 20th anniversary! Return of Laurie Strode! First time I would see a "Halloween" movie on the big screen! But…yeah, I thought it was middling. Like you said, nothing great or nothing horrendous. I…
I think the original "Child's Play" holds up really well, and although I'd say without hestitation that it's the best of the Chucky movies, my favourite moment in the entire series has to be the gloriously over-the-top toy-factory finale in "Child's Play 2." (For my money, the the best of the sequels. And it has a…
"Weird Science" and "Donnie Darko" both have a Tears for Fears thing going on…
After hearing about this sale, I went to the Criterion website, loaded up the cart, proceeded to the checkout, applied the promo code…only to find out that @#$%&*!! Criterion doesn't ship orders overseas.
If we're talking about albums that Bowie-as-producer throttled the energy out of, my first answer would be Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" (good album, though). And maybe even Bowie's own "Station to Station," which is a masterpiece and all, but I'd be curious to hear the original mix. I think Bowie himself…
I say it's Duck Season, and I say, FIRE!!!
You implying that Bowie produced "Raw Power"? He didn't; he only mixed it. And, by his own admission, it was a salvage job, because Iggy (the credited, but massively inexperienced) producer had fucked up the mix before Bowie went anywhere near it. (It's telling that, when Iggy's remix of "Raw Power" was released in…
I know I have seen "Paycheck," but I can barely remember it. I thought Lucy Liu was in it, but I believe I'm getting mixed up with "Cypher." Those two movies might be miles different, but my mind insists they're interchangeable.
"Hurrah for science, Woo?"
