I've only read the book once, not sure I could stomach it twice, and the film seemed more a  dark-comedy. The novel was so nihilistic and dark, with moments of black comedy peaking in.

Oh yes indeed. Jaws the novel is awful. It has whole chapters about characters pondering the sea.
