Herringbone is a perfectly good knit for a suit! It give a nice subtle impression of vertical lines without being actual stripes, the same way a fine grenadine tie gives texture without being too casual. I'm surprised Schmidt said that. AND that his summer suit wasn't seersucker or linen.
