@avclub-f8665a36d5a911922da81a12443887ed:disqus I was going to ask- was Heller there too?
That's great stuff Bruiser. It really is a small world when you're hanging around the record store, but you don't always realize it at the time.
I'm still waiting for any of my dipshit compatriots to hit it..

I agree with you and think they tie into the emo / post hardcore / shirtless dude continuum completely. BUT, you can't help but admit that there abstracted approach and dynamics figured pretty heavily in bands like Mogwai and Godspeed.
But as a huge emo/hardcore nerd, I'm with you- they're much closer to Moss Icon than

Likes All Around!

Many thanks- I'd never heard Red Sparowes. I liked Isis a lot and was a HUGE Pleasure Forever/Slaves fan and had no idea Dave was in this.

When the second Mars Volta shows (not counting the secret Defacto shows) in Los Angeles happened they sold out in 5 seconds. 5 freaking seconds! Their first show with Dead Low Tide didn't, but Flea has just joined the group and apparently most of the capacity went to the guest list.
We headed out to the Henry Fonda

Great Call- No mention of Fridge who are firmly in the Post-Rock camp. There was a time when I would've referred to Four Tet as 'that guy from Fridge,'
Makes me think of that covers album Adem did some years back- great stuff!

Oh man, Moss Icon…Post-Hardcore, Emo, whatever I LOVE IT! Shirtless dudes that care too much FOREVER!

I LOVED Mercury Program! Reminds me of the early 2000s..Them and American Analog Set and Tristeza and Album Leaf and all that pretty Xylophone shit…I knew them before Tortoise and all that!

Maybe give Slint another try? I didn't like them when I first tried them but I've really come around recently.
I really do like hardcore and post-hardcore of the late 80s and early 90s though, so that could be a bias..

Agreed- I'd put them firmly in the math-rock camp with Hella and Oxes and Orthrelm and all the dorky stuff I loved in High School.

I think you do strike on something with the Bonnie and Clyde thing- I had that with Slint or even My Bloody Valentine, where you go 'This is It? This is what people liked?'
But a big part of it is the diversity of bands being lumped into the genre constraints. Tortoise are much more genre-hoppers that end up being

I agree, but many people will be turned off by the cerebral touches. EitS or Sigur Ros will appeal a lot more to rockists who may not be down with the dub/jazz/electronic flourished.
Of course, Post-Rock could almost be defined by that cerebral adventurous aspect..that's why I fell for it!

That's a good point. Only Tortoise (and maybe Mogwai a little) flirted with the motorik Stereolab loved so much, and none of them tried to bring Francoise Hardy into the mix.

Any of this genre stuff is semantic-city, but I'd put Stereolab more as a Krautrock/French Pop/Post-Punk/Lounge hybrid.
But wait, the drummer from Tortoise produced their records, so….

I finally made my way back to Spiderland after trying it in the emo-post-rock-a-palooza a decade ago. I didn't get it at all then, and didn't understand the hype.
Listened to it on Spotify a year ago and it fit like a glove. The mystery, the guitars..Breadcrumb Trail just hits it so perfectly for me.

@avclub-920530cb8744c679e3a2ece84f1d5ce4:disqus et. al. Isis was a Great choice, though it took me a while to get them as well. (back when Oceanic was their new album!)
Everyone else- YES to Earth, SunnO))) and everything. What about High on Fire?
Wait- KRALLICE!!! Not sure if it's as 'post' as all these bands (not as

I saw them in San Diego around the same time as @avclub-cfe912f5cb3aa572bd1c9ae2a9b82207:disqus  and they were phenomenal. Haven't seen them in a few years, but I cn't imagine they've lost their touch. Great Great guys.

First Irwin and now this?!? You're Killing Me Larry!!!
In all seriousness, I'll always applaud his work in the Torch Song Trilogy.

Agree completely.
I also knew I was on cocaine!
