Right, but that's basically saying "it's influential because it's influential." Also, the spread of SNL alums includes far, far, far more turds than gems. I mean, you've got Bill Murray on the one hand, and Adam Sandler and Joe Piscopo and David Spade and the lady who played Pat and legions more on the other.

I'm honestly not sure what SNL ever did to earn its place as some fabled comedy classic institution. (I've seen those "classic" seasons, and they're as wildly uneven as the ones that follow them.) Had most Americans just never seen sketch comedy before?
