I don't think it was really a specific reference, but the whole getting stars to open up part is basically Maron's angle. That and the stamps advertisement, since he reads those all the goddamn time.

C. Thomas Howell is amazing on Southland. Probably the best performance of his career. The rest of that cast is just incredible though, which makes sense since Coppola directed.
