The old episodes were unbelievably cinematic-looking. The new episodes are so blandly directed and suffered from horrible, TV-looking lighting. I also blame the colourist for not toning things down a bunch.

Whenever I get frustrated at how Game of Thrones strings us along, I think about how Spartacus managed satisfyingly self-contained episodes that still managed to exist within and advance the overarching story.
