I did not know that, nor have I heard the Wilburys' second album as alluded to by @avclub-92a4841c9f86965effbc29fa6eae9f77:disqus.  Is it any good, and how does it compare to the first one?

I do hear the difference, but I listened to the Crime Story version right after the original and I'm pretty sure it is indeed Del Shannon. Just a little older, as @Persia says.

My wife's family from Brantford and Hamilton (Ontario, for those who don't know) pretty much do have that accent, though.  And they will absolutely bust out unironically with Canadianisms like "Nice HEAD on ya!" when someone does something stupid, etc.

My dad had a friend who, despite being American and a native speaker of English, pronounced it as "melnk".  Bizarre.
