thrym, I'm still pondering your take on the orrery. I returned the book to the library, but now I want to look at a few passages after reading your post.
Also, I was not intending to draw any particular posters here. I was actually thinking of the filmmaker because I had a discussion about him the other day with some friends of mine. And my train of thought brought me back to that conversation.
Hate to be that Guy,
Continued . . .(my comment was too long. Sorry).
I am with you regarding the frustration with the sitting around and waiting. I wanted someone not to act like a benign zombie. Reading a book about generations of people sitting around waiting for something to happen can be a little taxing for the reader. I was regularly impressed by the language and tone, but after…
I can't afford cable. Plus, I really wouldn't have time to watch that much on it. :(
You don't know if that was a test or not. Smoky asks, but gets the first of many non-answers. I thought the book was beautifully written, but I'm with Dick Grayson. At that length, I'm going to need some sort of urgency or need to see "how the tale ends".
Cauda Pavonis,
I never saw DEAR JOHN, which is my excuse for misspelling "Hirsch".
Fairies
I am not a fan of this book. I could not get into the obscure fairy / casually waiting for destiny stuff. After I finished it, I started reading THE STORY SISTERS, but it's also about fairies. I am fairied the fuck out, so I only got about fifty pages into Story Sisters before taking it back to the library. I…
I also kept thinking of the monster from LOST everytime I saw "Smokey"s name.
After all that, you fail to mention THE FISHER KING.
Brief Flashbacks
Gus Vant Sant used to do a lot of those quick flashes . It seems to me like he's grown out of it, but he used that particular thing throughout the nineties. He even inserted flashes into his remake of PSYCHO.
Therapists in Movies
I really like Judd Hirsh in ORDINARY PEOPLE. It's actually one of my favorite movies ever.
I think my experience may be different than yours.
Yeah, my initial reaction was that she was docking time for bad behavior. Don's probably more accurate. Betty isn't counting the hard times. Although they weren't separated for an entire year.
Regarding Peggy's Date
There were two bits of business about this that I really liked.
I really like Jared Harris. I hope he sticks around for a while.
True. I guess that excludes it. Although the real incident didn't involve any microchips in anyone's brains . . . that we know of.
